The reverse celebrates the Carthusian Horse (Caballo Cartujano), one of Spain’s most prestigious equestrian bloodlines. The design depicts a Carthusian horse in motion, accompanied by the inscription “CABALLO CARTUJANO”, the Royal Spanish Mint mark, the year 2024, and the denomination 15 EURO CENT. The Carthusian lineage traces its history to the monastery of La Cartuja in Jerez, where selective breeding of Andalusian horses began centuries ago.
The obverse is inspired by Spain’s historic Columnario Real de a Ocho, one of the most internationally recognised Spanish coin designs. It features two crowned hemispheres flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with the motto PLUS VLTRA, together with the inscriptions “FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA” and “1/10 ONZA 999,9 ORO.” The Royal Spanish Mint also incorporates its patented Quadruple Latent Image security feature into the design.
Finished in Reverse Proof, the coin combines polished and frosted surfaces to highlight the intricate horse design. With a maximum authorised mintage of only 25,000 coins, the 2024 Carthusian Horse offers both investment-grade gold and strong collector appeal.
