The Royal Mint Guan Gong 20g Gold Bullion Bar
A striking combination of British minting craftsmanship, Chinese cultural heritage and pure investment gold, this 20g minted gold bar from The Royal Mint features Guan Gong, one of the most recognised and respected figures in Chinese culture.
Also known as Guan Yu, Emperor Guan and Guan Yunchang, Guan Gong was a celebrated military general during China's Three Kingdoms period. Over the centuries, his reputation developed far beyond that of a historical warrior, and today he is widely regarded as a symbol of loyalty, integrity, courage, protection, wealth and good fortune.
The Royal Mint introduced Guan Gong on a gold bullion bar for the first time in 2022, creating an intricately detailed depiction of the legendary warrior together with his distinctive weapon. Gold was particularly fitting for the design because of its longstanding cultural association with prosperity and good fortune.
The design was developed with cultural input from Wei Shao, Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at Cardiff University, as part of The Royal Mint's work surrounding the Guan Gong release.
About Guan Gong
Guan Yu was a military general who served the warlord Liu Bei during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history. His actions were celebrated for centuries and were famously immortalised in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of China's great classical novels.
Over time, the historical Guan Yu became revered as Guan Gong. Today, representations of him can be found in businesses, homes and temples throughout China and other parts of East Asia, where he is associated with protection, loyalty, integrity, wealth and good fortune.
